Description

The Sacred Books of China, Part 1 is an 1879 translation of The Shû King, Shih King and Hsiâo King by James Legge. It is the third volume in the Sacred Books of the East series, and the first in a series of six containing significant texts from ancient China, each serving different purposes in Chinese literature and philosophy. The Shû King (Book of Documents) is one of the oldest Chinese classics, a compilation of historical speeches, decrees, and events, spanning from early Chinese mythology to the early Zhou Dynasty. It provides insight into governance, moral authority, and the virtues expected of rulers. Shih King (Book of Songs or Poetry) is a collection of ancient Chinese poetry, encompassing 305 poems, including folk songs, hymns, and odes. It reflects the everyday life, social customs, and politics of early China, and is highly regarded for its literary and moral significance. Hsiâo King (Book of Filial Piety) is a Confucian text that emphasizes the importance of filial piety, which is respect for one’s parents and ancestors. It outlines the ethical foundations of family relationships and societal harmony, central to Confucian values.
